Mandibular Advancement Devices

  • MADs are alternatives to CPAP for treating sleep apnea. They work by moving the jaw and tongue forward during sleep, this increases the airway space and reduces throat constriction.
  • MAD are custom made and fit for your mouth. Temporary or Emergency MADs can also be made in office to treat your obstructive sleep apnea while you are waiting for your custom appliance.
  • MAD can not be worn if you have dentures, gum disease or severe dental issues. Dr. Lefty will meet with you to determine if you are a candidate for an oral appliance.

Risks and side effects

Although a MAD can help limit sleep apnea symptoms and snoring, there can be side effects, usually mild, including: jaw and mouth discomfort, toothache, excess drooling, dry mouth or gum irritation.

MAD vs. CPAP

CPAP is the gold standard for treating obstructive sleep apnea, people do not always use it. About 50% of people using CPAP therapy eventually stop using it and leave their obstructive sleep apnea untreated.

In comparison with CPAP, MADs are portable and do not produce noise. They also do not require electricity!
